Life Drawing 07 - Composition
Brief
Composition
Alan Watts on Ma Yuan landscape paintings –
“One of the most striking features of the sung landscape, as of sung as a whole, is the relative emptiness of the picture, an emptiness which appears however, to be part of the painting and not just unpainted background. By filling in just one corner the artist makes the whole area of the picture alive. Ma Yuan was a master of this technique that amounts almost to painting by not painting”
Today we are looking at composition as the central idea in our drawings. We will look at what makes an interesting composition and how we can plan this before the drawing starts.
The class is useful for all levels of ability.
As usual we will start with guided warm ups and the basic ideas but the rest of the class will be free for you to explore as you wish, you can explore something from a previous class or follow instruction.
